Practice for Math League Elementary School Number Sense

How to Use This Website

This practice website is designed to help students build the foundational skills needed for the Math League Elementary School Number Sense competition.

Before you begin, you will take a one-time pre-test—a timed mock test that establishes your starting point. Do not worry about your score; no one is expected to perform well before training. This score will serve as your permanent baseline, allowing you to compare future mock-test results and see how much you have improved.

If you have already learned the mental-math strategies, begin with the practice drills to improve your speed and accuracy. If you have not learned them yet, watch the video explanations first. After learning each strategy, complete the corresponding topic-based practice set until you can solve every problem quickly, accurately, and entirely in your head. Earning three stars is a good indication that you have mastered the topic.

Once you have earned three stars on every topic-based practice set, move on to the 80-question practice set in unlimited-time mode. After you submit your answers, the results page will identify your weaker areas and direct you to the appropriate topic-based practice sets. Continue practicing until you earn three stars on the 80-question practice set. Then switch to mock-test mode, which has a 10-minute time limit and uses the official contest scoring system, with scores out of 400 instead of stars.

When you can consistently score 380 or higher (95%) on the mock tests, you are ready to begin working on official Math League Number Sense sets, available on the Math League website. Completing three timed official practice sets each day for three months should help most students achieve a near-perfect Number Sense score.

This method helped the creator of this website improve her Math League Number Sense score from 50% (200 out of 400 points) to 98% (391 out of 400 points). Keep practicing, and you can get there too!
